What are the belt ranks In Judo? How do you gain ranks?

What are the ranks such as white first..........and like black last.

Also how do you gain ranks?|||Achievement in Judo is recognised by a series of ranks. The student ranks are called kyu and are usually differentiated by coloured belts (obi). Different colours may be used around the world and in some countries there are more than 6 kyu ranks. The black belt, or expert, ranks are called dan. The traditional Judo ranks are:

English: Japanese:

6th grade rokyu

5th grade gokyu

4th grade yonkyu

3rd grade sankyu

2nd grade nikyu

1st grade ikkyu

1st degree shodan

2nd degree nidan

3rd degree sandan

4th degree yodan

5th degree godan and beyond.

Alternatively:

6th Kyu White belt

5th Kyu Yellow belt

4th Kyu Orange belt

3rd Kyu Green belt

2nd Kyu Blue belt

1st Kyu Brown belt

1st – 5th Dan Black belt

6th – 8th Dan Red and White belt

9th –11th Dan Red belt

12th Dan White belt

Note: 10th Dan is the highest Judo grade ever awarded by the Kodokan in Japan.

Karate kata are different compared to kata in judo. Judo kata are formal demonstrations of prearranged techniques of Judo. There are forms for throwing techniques (nage no kata), grappling techniques (katame no kata), self defense techniques and other aspects of Judo.

Have a look at these web-site, it is excellent for judo kata demonstrations and other useful info:

As for how to gain ranks from white to brown it really depends on the dojo, I believe that only the black belt ranks have a actual regulated test.|||www.judoinfo.com/obi.htm
