What's the difference between Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Judo and Kung-Fu?

And which one is better? I%26#039;m planning to take lessons for one of them.|||Yea wow... If you are smart you wont listen to any of the above answers... They%26#039;re all inaccurate. Here are the real answers to the question you asked...

First off. No fighting style is better than another. It all depends on what you personally prefer. Each fighting style has its own preferences. It all depends on your skill.

Tae Kwon Do relies HIGHLY on legs and very little effective punching... Personally I did it for 7 years... And I quit because I found it ineffective in real combat. Most of its technique relies highly on momentum. Which can be good and bad. Its my least favorite style of the 4...

Judo is great, and it my second favorite of the 4. It relies highly on leverage techniques. Its known for its throws and stand up control. Its wonderful for learning how to control your opponent in combat so that you may apply the appropriate attacks.

Karate... Karate is very complicated. There are tons of different styles of it. Most of them being Japanese... Its known for its rigidness and its high powered moves. However... It leave the opponent extremely open to attacks to the opponent, and is known also for its close combat.

Gung Fu... Is my personal favorite of all branches of fighting styles. Gung Fu not only has very high level power, but also focuses on developing internal energy in practical ways. Its known for its ability to use Qi. At high levels this style can teach you to harm and opponent and even heal with Qi energy. I recommend it highly. It builds a strong body and a strong mind. You can learn to harness your inner energy and learn to use them in the way you see fit. I practice Gung Fu, not only because it was my passion and always will be, but because it opened up tons of opportunity for me. At the ability I am now I can become a Qi Gung Therapist. I learned Acupuncture. Acupressure. And not to mention the long life aspect. I now have three other job opportunities. I%26#039;m a teacher now, but when I get old I%26#039;ll still be able to do what I love.

My personal favorite of Gung Fu is baguazhang. Its a highly effective advanced martial art. I would try an external martial art before trying this out though. It gains a lot of its power through circular movements and coiling techniques. Its great so please keep it in mind.

|||Tae Kwon Do - Korean martial art. Involves punching and heavy emphasis on kicking. Trademarked for it%26#039;s spectacular aerial kicking techniques.

Karate - Japanese martial art. Developed empty hand techniques with Chinese and native Japanese roots. Emphasis on open hand strikes, knife hand strikes, punches, kicks, grappling and throwing and locking. Weapons. Known for it%26#039;s nerve and vital point strikes. One-hit, one-kill.

Judo - Japanese martial art and sport form of Japanese Jiujitsu. Emphasizes throws, grappling, locks, chokes and submissions.

Kung Fu - Chinese martial arts. Literally translates to %26quot;ability [to do something]%26quot; and used to classify any number of the Chinese styles such as Wing Chun, Choy Lay Fut, Tai Chi Chuan, Wushu, Shaolin arts, etc. Depending on style can emphasize everything from punching and kicking to weapons and grappling.

They are all good and not good. Each one has it%26#039;s own advantages and disadvantages. You need to ask yourself what your natural fighting style is. Do you like to kick? Do you like to punch? Grapple? Are you a direct attacking person or a soft receptive person?

Edit: Yes according to Katana, karate%26#039;s roots can be traced back to the Ryukyu Islands (Liu Chiu) of which Okinawa is included. Despite the obvious cross cultural influences and territorial disputes (ie Dao Yu Tai Islands), the art of Karate is generally associated to be Japanese and that is what I am going by.|||Takekwondo is a Korean art - Primarily foucuses on Kicking

Karate is a Japanese art - Focuses on Joint locks, arm and leg strikes

Judo is also a Japanese art - Focuses on Grappling, mainly Thorws.

Kung fu is actually just a term used for all Chinese martial arts.

There are many styles of Kung fu, I strongly believe San shou is

the most Leathal style of Kung fu. It is a mixture of

Kickboxing (with knees), Wrestling and Judo.

From one to four, these are the best - one being the best.

1. San shou (Kung fu style, also known as Sanda)

2. Judo

3. Karate

4. Tae Kwon Do|||Bart U has a pretty good answer, but just to correct one thing, karate was developed in Okinawa, not Japan. And no the Okinawan%26#039;s do not consider themselves Japanese.

Other then that none is better then the others. It all comes down to how you are taught, how the class trains, and what you put into your training.|||the style of fighting is different

tae kwon do and karate are somewhat similar and both use arms and legs as weapons

in judo you use grappling and throws

in kung fu, you use weapons such as ur limbs as well as swords, katanas, and other cutting and slicing weapons etc.

kung fu is the fastest and deadliest form of martial arts

i wld choose kung fu as it is best for self defense|||Just to note, if your considering taken classes in any of these arts. Make sure you place more emphasize on a good teacher, if you want to be good anyway. It can be the best style in the world but won%26#039;t mean squat if the teacher isn%26#039;t qualified.

(Everyone has given a good description of the styles so I won%26#039;t bother)|||other than their names:

origins

curriculum

such as kicking, grappling, and punching|||fighting style

pressure points
