I want to be in the Army Rangers and my dad told me I should take a Judo or Karate class to sort of get a head start.|||As a martial artist and a soldier, I would say learn some judo and perhaps some basic karate. You should really develope your running, sit-ups, and push ups.|||Military martial arts incorporates different martial arts systems including throws from Judo, strikes, disarming technques and escapes from Krav Maga, ground fighting from brazilian jujitsu, etc. If you want something close to what the military does take Krav Maga or any other martial art that is strictly combat base, ie, uses moves/strikes to immediately disable/kill an a opponent and not just based on sport alone. You would be able to tell which martial art is a combat style or sporting style.|||It is, actually. Throws are something you will be taught in basic and already knowing how to do them would be a plus. Army Ranger school also teaches a form of martial arts for hand to hand combat that uses throws, chokes, and quick strikes.
Judo is great for learning throws, chokes and holds. But not much else.
Jujistsu would be a better art. It has a lot of the elements of judo with strikes as well.|||Only if you are interested. A better idea would be to get in very good shape. Go to military.com for workout ideas when preparing for elite forces. I guess it depends on how old you are. If you are young, getting involved in any sport that is physical and requires discipline will help develop the appropriate %26quot;mental toughness%26quot;.|||Not Judo... That%26#039;s nothing more than a chineese form of wresteling. Just a sport. We have our own version of martial arts, but it%26#039;s a lot closer to Kung-fu than anything else. Submission holds, chokes, and the like. We don%26#039;t do the high kicks and crap like that. More ground work.|||It%26#039;s good for learning throws, but the one I think best for combat would be Krav Maga. It%26#039;s the Israeli Defense Force%26#039;s martial arts and very practical for combat from what I%26#039;ve seen.|||As per my husband, the army has adopted the Gracie Brothers Brazilian Jui Jitsu as part of their hand to hand combatives. So this may be something you want to check out.|||I would recommend Hapkido or Jeet Kun Do.
