Im starting Judo in a weeks time and i just wanted to know roughly how long it takes to earn a black belt in Judo. I know you cant earn it real easy, i know it takes hard work, dedication, motivation etc. im just curious, many thanks.|||on average 4 yrs but people learn/earn at different speeds.|||As murrayc said approx 4yrs +/-, I am living now and training in Europe (judoka, jutsu %26amp; MT) and come from NZ have trained in other countries and wonder whether you%26#039;ve asked yourself this question %26quot;do I want to learn: Sport or Traditional Judo?%26quot; the comment %26quot;Euro trash%26quot; is abit lop-sided, with Sport Judo (as with many of todays martial arts, they have gone into these two sections) is not without technique...and other countries are not without fault when it comes to its interpretation of Judo (in the sports arena) yet you will find some very good dojo%26#039;s that will concentrate on the more traditional style of Judo, leaning away from sport tendency or competition altogether. Talk to/find out from instructors or email clubs from websites... allot of instructures are more than willing to help and further people%26#039;s interests in Judo (or other martial arts).
If your quest is to just gain a black belt... then it would not matter if you choose sport or traditional focused clubs, if you are a quick and effective retainer of info. then you could prove all wrong and be a blackbelt in any number of years but what to do with all that %26quot;qauntity%26quot;... that will may be be another posting on this site later on?
Success in your search/journey...|||about 2 or 3 years..|||Depends on the dojo. Some just let you clock hours like one I know of in Houston, Texas. Not tests, not nothing. Just log the hours and presto...you get a Shodan in about a year maybe year an a half. A shame, the school used to put out a lot of national champions...the owner just needs the money I guess. He teaches the old true judo, no strength, all timing and technique. Not at all like the euro-trash strength based stuff you see at the olympics and other competitions now days. Hell watch the stuff on utube from the olympics, it looks like a bunch of kids on the playground throwing each other around. Not style or technique. Certainly not a martial %26quot;art%26quot;.
