Can Judo be effective in a real life situation?

Are their any Judo guys out there who have used it in real life? How much did it help? How about other martial arts? Has anyone ever used it in real life? Tell me your story.|||Absolutely have used Judo on multiple occasions.

It is probably the one art I have used to the most.

Most people who talk about one on one situations, don%26#039;t realize that No Martial Art helps you when in multiple attackers scenearios. And whether or not you want to end up in a grappling situation in a multiple scenario doesn%26#039;t matter, you will. And you need grappling ability to control and limit the damage you take.

I worked Security at a fairly rough redneck bar. It was on the outskirts of the county, which meant it took the Sheriffs office at least 10 minutes to get there. Which meant we had to deal with situations on our own for a fairly long amount of time.

As our goal was not to hand the Sheriff%26#039;s office a big bloody mess of a guy, we had to use means that not only ensured our safety, but did minimal damage to the patron.

We became very successful, mostly in part to Law Enforcement cooperation, my Judo background, the fact that the majority of us all trained MMA together, knew each other%26#039;s abilities and cross trained.

We became so successful that other bar owners call us in to teach their guys our philosophy and methodologies, and in turn we created a certificate system for security workers in our town.

Judo was one of the sole applications of what we were using. We used throws, chokes, pins, and law enforcement based control methods.

I have found it to be more useful than my Muay Thai experience, or any of the other traditional arts. Mainly because it is so hard to defend against. People can fight pain, they can fight through seeing their own blood, but they can%26#039;t fight their brain being deprived of oxygen.

I quick choke has helped me remove someone from our bar with very few people realizing what exactly was going on. To them it just looked like we were carrying some drunk guy out who passed out.

I can tell you with all certainity that throwing someone who has not taken Judo is amazingly easy, and very devastating. And closing the gap is very easy even against boxers.

I have used Judo on several occasions in my younger days in the military, as is customary when in the service to find yourself in many a bar brawl.

Look at the early UFCs, a gentleman by the name of Remco Parduel (dutch Judoka) took on a phenomenal Muay Thai boxer named Orlando Weit (who is also dutch I think). Remco closed the gap, threw Weit, and then preceded to elbow him into unconsciousness. This was during the times of no weight divisions, very little to no rules.

Other people talking about Krav Maga and such, those things are great. If you spar and train at them, not if you take a class once or twice a week and go over cheap trick techniques. You actually have to spar and fight in order to be an effective fighter.

Which is one of the advantages Judo has, you know how to throw someone who is fully resisting you trying to throw them. You know how it feels to be thrown, choked, had a joint pressed to nearly breaking, you have felt a persons natural reactions to having these techniques applied at full speed. Most karateka, kung fu, traditional arts in general have no idea how it feels to be punched in the face, or what it feels like to hit someone in the face.

People talk about eye gouges and knee strikes, and have never done either on a live resisting human being. They talk about bone breaking, yet have never broken someone elses bones, or injured someone else.

A person can fight through a kick to the groin. Believe me.

Anyway, it is my experience that Judo works great in real situations, and far better than any art in which you never get to practice your techniques full speed vs. a resisting opponent who is trying to win.|||martial art is for self-defense.anyway the best and most effective is shaolin kungfu|||judo does work i studied judo for 15 years and used it often while working as a bouncer to stop fights and to protect myself|||Let me put it this way: If you were faced with an attack, would you rather know, or not know Judo?

So the answer is yes.|||i havent have to used martial arts in real life... well actually once but that guy tried to steal my glue stick lol :p

I do karate my sensei has had a situation when he went to a pub. my sensei is a very small, short guy and he looks weak. So the big %26#039;gangsta%26#039; put him in a head lock. so my sensei squeezed his balls (oww) and knocked him out.

So karate is quite useful but judo can be to. as judo is %26#039;using your opponents weight against them%26#039; so i figure it is.|||Judo can and has been used in real life to restrain or kill an attacker. Something I read a few years ago:

%26quot;A German camper was attacked by a man wielding a hatchet. The attacker had knocked on the door of the camper%26#039;s trailer in a park, early in the morning, and told the camper that something was leaking from under the trailer. When the camper bent to look under the trailer, the assailant struck him twice in the head with a hatchet. The camper, in turn, slew his attacker. It was reported that the camper, in his 50s, was a judoka with 15 years of training.%26quot; http://www.e-budo.com/forum/printthread....

It may be assumed that a chokehold was used, which is also found in jujutsu, BJJ, submission wrestling, and mixed martial arts.|||it could be but judo you just put your the persone down that it|||of course! my buddy from high school was a judoka and he was being picked on by two lunatics back then. i was heading home one afternoon until a common friend ran up to me and said those two clowns were doing a number on my buddy. so i ran up to the place he said they were only to find that he as already finished with the two (both ended up with split lips, bumps, and bruises).

bottom line? it%26#039;s not about which art you use, it%26#039;s all about timing. if you were trained properly, you%26#039;d know when and how to strike. whether you%26#039;re a grappler or a striker, if you got your timing perfect you can pretty much handle any situation.

for ex, if a judoka has you by your sleeves and he%26#039;s got that evil look in his eyes, you%26#039;re pretty much dead. however, if you hit him good and stun him even before he gets a proper grip, you%26#039;ve got the advantage. you just have to watch for that perfect opportunity to come by and hit your opponent with whatever you%26#039;ve perfected with the art that you%26#039;re practicing. the key is knowing when that opportunity is.|||actualy i MMA fight every day if u dont know its pretty much cage fighting and i train with judo, bjj *brazilian jujitsu* muaythai kick boxing pretty much it all....and judo is all great throws and take downs...if ur one on one with a partner judo is the shiznit, but if u have more then one guy you DONOT want 2 touch the ground because his buddy will be stomping your face lol.

but there are some judo moves that are just throws and can redirect people for ex.

if you came running at me ill just step 2 the side and push u away 2 make you look goofy. lol.

hope i helped.|||yes any martial art can be effective in real life they were all designed for real fighting suituations you have to learn to how to apply it to todays fighting judo uses alot of choke holds so ya if you choke a guy unconsicous it will work preety well you have to study what the moves were used for you can juts stand in martial arts calss learn a few moves and try to fight learn how to apply the stuff|||Unfortunately I have used Judo for self-defense here in Boston. It works.

I was taught Judo in 1968 when it was real. Judo was a martial art then. No crash mats, no blue gi, no %26#039;golden score%26#039;, and you threw your opponent two inches into the mat.

Today in 2007 Sport Judo is a waste of time and will get you killed in a street fight.

Within Judo%26#039;s KATA are eye gouges, groin kicks, wrist locks, spear hands to the throat, knife defenses, stick attack %26amp; defenses. Judo is not just about tournaments but also self-defense. http://www.judoinfo.com/katagosh.htm|||uh............................YEAH|||Every martial art has its own place of application in the real world. Judo is actually very pratical in one on one situations especially when the aggressor is bigger or heavier in physique. It%26#039;s also a less fatal mean of defense.

It%26#039;s very useful for females against unwelcomed advance and the overhead throw is one of the best defense against attackers from behind.|||Personally, Krav Maga and Haganah are the most effect martial arts. They are quick, they are dirty, and they end fights quickly.|||I have no personalJudo stories %26#039;cause I don%26#039;t take Judo, but know Judo people who have told me about them using it in situations.

It seems best for one-on-one combat though.
