What is the difference between Karate, Tae-Kwon-Do, and Judo? Also, where does each originate?

If you could answer this for me, i would be greatful. im really curious as to how each are different (being a karate student myself) and I want to know if their origins have anything to do with their differences. thanks guys.|||The above person is very, very wrong.

Tae Kwan Do originated in Korea. It HAS since spread to thailand and other more southern countries, but it%26#039;s Korean.

Karate and Judo are both Japanese arts. They were originally part of the samurai lifestyle %26quot;bushido,%26quot; although karate originated mainly on the southern island of okinawa, where no one was allowed to bear arms so they learned to defend themselves without weapons, or with farming tools.

TKD(tae kwan do), is largely a kicking art. It does have some punching and other striking but that is mainly the realm of Hapkido, which is sort of a hybrid of korean and japanese self defense techniques and is often taught along with TKD.

Karate is a more even balance of punches and kicks, with other kinds of hand techniques thrown in such as backfists, elbow strikes, shutos, nukites, and other assorted striking forms.

Judo is largely a non-striking sport, and is typically done with heavier gis(uniforms) than those worn in karate. It is an art focused around throws and grappling, with some emphasis on joint locks, arm bars, and chokes as well.

For practical self defense, you should look into learning both karate and judo. Since they come from the same, central art they hybridize very well, and you%26#039;ll have the skills to be a distance fighter as well as a close-in grappler/thrower.

Tae kwan do%26#039;s flashy kick techniques are more suited to tournaments rather than actual street situations. If you%26#039;re looking to win competitions and whatnot, I%26#039;d say TKD is on equal level with the japanese arts, but in terms of raw self defense potential, karate and judo come out ahead(assuming you%26#039;re learning traditional arts and not some funky hybrid).

You may also want to look into Kung Fu, which originates in china. It is a slightly different art from karate and TKD. It%26#039;s more practical self-defense wise than TKD, but not quite as much as karate(at least in most cases). It%26#039;s a very interesting art to learn though.

Happy travels!|||There are over 100 different styles of KF. Some are better than Karate, some definately not. Some are complete and include grappling, some are stand up only. Picking an efficient KF style is very important.

Karate was invented from Kung fu, which was invented from YOGA. Yoga means discipline Report Abuse
|||I was in TKD and Judo and loved it I loved doing forms in TKD, I agree with the answer you chose but I could use TKD to defend my self also, I%26#039;m looking to get back in both of them I%26#039;m 3 belts away from Black in TKD and 7/8(can%26#039;t remember) belts away from Black in Judo Report Abuse
|||I agree with everything the above poster has to say. Very well informed, that one.

Might I suggest that you take Krav Maga as well. For street defense situations, there%26#039;s nothing like it. It teaches you to take care of the situation with no B.S. It come from Isreal.|||The first answer is as wrong as can be.

Danny W (the second answer) is absolutely correct.

I couln%26#039;t have said it better myself!|||Tae kwon Do is kick-boxing it comes from Thailand! I used to do it, awesome sport!

Karate... is based on self defence, you will find there are no real hits to the face, it comes from China.

Judo.... I dont know much about.... its liks wrestling and submissions and throwing people around. Im guessing it comes from....... Japan?

May the force be with you :)

..|||As most of you agree with Danny W ,because he is 100% correct ,well done that man

I Teach karate ,so i should know|||karate---chnese martail art from china yet adopted by japanese...this type of art focuses on the feet than those of the hand..

tae kwon do---from korea the pure kicking art though with some punch....

judo---from japan it uses throws...

the best martial art is mixed art that incorporates punching kicking and grappling..|||Danny is right on...

As for Hapkido, pretty correct. Layman%26#039;s terms Hapkido is a mix of TKD and Akido. Teaches punching, kicking, and using the other person%26#039;s energy and momentum against them. Hapkido is great, as is Akido I am sure, but takes longer to become effective due to the need to learn how to fight by moving away and learning techniques rather than just a punch or a kick.

Also, consider Kempo which is Kung Fu that went to Japan and mixed with Karate. Often it is called Kempo Karate -- it focuses on much of Kung Fu while teaching much of the karate moves.|||Danny W is correct, Tae-kwon-do originated from Korea. I don%26#039;t know a single thing about Judo though.

I am currently taking Tae-Kwon-Do classes,so I am still learning alot about it.

I think it is better than most martial arts.
